A reason to start

Why you should learn Portuguese

Portuguese is a language you can use. Brazil, Portugal, several countries in Africa, a huge amount of music, and a lot of people who are glad you tried.

One language, a very large map

Portuguese is spoken in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe, and in communities well beyond those borders. Brazil alone is reason enough for many people.

If your reason is a city, a partner, a job, or a trip, that is a better reason than a ranking of useful languages. Why you should learn Portuguese is personal. The language is large enough to meet you there.

You already know more than you think

If you speak English, a lot of the vocabulary will look familiar, and the path to a first conversation is shorter than it is for many other languages. You can be polite, order, and ask a question without living inside a textbook first.

Muito prazer.

Nice to meet you.

Não entendi.

I didn’t understand.

Culture you can answer

Bossa nova, funk, fado, football, food, novels, film. You do not need the language to enjoy them. You need it to answer back. A little Portuguese changes a menu, a lyric, and a weekend from something you watch into something you can join.

It is a good language to speak, not only to study. The grammar will wait. The person on the other side of the sentence will not. That is why Paseo starts here, with Brazilian Portuguese.
